Vijayawada looking to host 2029 National Games: Report

VIJAYAWADA MP Kesineni Sivanath, also known as Chinni, has stated that the State government is prioritising the enhancement of sports infrastructure in Vijayawada, a key part of the Amaravati Capital Region.

He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu aims to transform the city into a major hub for national and international sport, with plans to host prestigious national-level competitions in the coming years.

On Wednesday, the MP, accompanied by Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohana Rao, inspected the ongoing modernisation of the Chennupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation (CHRMC) Indoor Stadium in Patamata. The leaders interacted with officials and reviewed the progress of various sports facilities being upgraded as part of a large-scale development initiative. MP Sivanath noted that the city’s stadiums are expected to be fully prepared to host the 2029 National Games, a key target set by the Chief Minister.

He announced that the Junior National Badminton Championships will be held in Vijayawada at the end of December. In preparation, major sporting venues across the city are undergoing rapid modernisation. While the CHRMC Indoor Stadium is being upgraded by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium and the Dandamudi Rajagopalarao Indoor Stadium will be jointly developed by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) and the VMC, he said.

He added that both Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada have recently hosted several national sports events, reflecting the State’s renewed commitment to supporting athletes. The new sports policy, he noted, offers significant incentives, remuneration and training support for emerging sportspersons.
