At the SportzPower ProLeagues Forum 2025, hosted on December 10, 2025, at the Boundary Hall, MCA Recreation Centre, BKC, Mumbai, the fireside chat titled “The 3C’s of Sportainment” explored the powerful intersection of cinema, celebrity culture, and competitive sport. The session featured Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Founder of the Celebrity Cricket League (CCL), in conversation with Dr. Jateen Rajput, Dean – MSEED, unpacking how sportainment has evolved into a major force in India’s fan-driven landscape.
Vishnu began by describing the unique spirit that defines CCL, emphasising how actors transform into athletes the moment they walk onto the field. “When actors come to play CCL, they forget that they are actors and become athletes and play without ego,” he said, highlighting the element of authenticity that keeps fans returning year after year. Vishnu added that credibility is the foundation of the league’s popularity, “Credibility stands true here as it proves worthy—fans buy tickets and come to watch because they see real competition.”
He noted that one of the most remarkable aspects of CCL is how it dissolves boundaries within the film industry. “Actors from different industries didn’t know one another earlier, but they proved that regional stars are equally capable and never got intimidated by anyone’s fandom.”
A defining factor behind CCL’s success, Vishnu said, is the pure passion of its celebrity players. “The celebrities don’t charge anything from us to play CCL—they play to win, crack the code, and lift the trophy.”
Reflecting on how audience behaviour has shifted, Vishnu explained how CCL adapted to changing content consumption patterns, “Consumption has changed drastically. We were one of the few leagues with commentary in eight languages—from television to digital. We now get more influencers and content creators involved to spend time, experience the matches, and create content around celebrities.”
He reminded the audience that sportainment itself is not a new concept, but one that requires constant reinvention. CCL first relied on distribution mechanisms like free passes to draw fans, but the post-pandemic era brought a strategic shift, “After the pandemic, we rethought everything and began selling tickets. And fans were willing to pay because the experience was genuine.”
Touching on league structure, Vishnu stressed the importance of selecting the right leaders behind each team. “Having the right team owners is important—strong and committed. Franchise fees, fan engagement, and long-term value all depend on leadership at the top.”
He concluded with a sentiment that captures the heart of CCL, “Fans come not only for the stars but for the love of the game.”
The conversation underscored how the blend of cinema and sport continues to evolve, with CCL standing as a reference point for how celebrity power, authentic competition, and fan-first experiences can create a compelling sportainment ecosystem in India.
