A LANDMARK YEAR for women’s cricket in India has earned global recognition, with the India women’s national cricket team shortlisted for the Laureus World Team of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards.
The nomination acknowledges the team’s maiden ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup triumph and a series of performances that captivated the cricketing world. They will compete against five other standout teams from 2025, each vying for one of sport’s most prestigious honours. Winners across eight award categories will be announced at a gala ceremony at Cibeles Palace in Madrid, with recipients selected by members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
In 2025, the Indian side achieved a historic breakthrough on home soil, lifting their first Women’s Cricket World Cup title. Their campaign included the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history in a thrilling semi-final victory over Australia, followed by a commanding 52-run win against South Africa in the final, a triumph that sparked celebrations nationwide.
This marks the third time Indian cricket has featured prominently at the Laureus Awards. Sachin Tendulkar, a Laureus Academy Member, received the Laureus Sporting Moment Award in 2020 for his iconic lap of honour after India’s 2011 men’s World Cup victory. Rishabh Pant was nominated for Comeback of the Year last year, while Vinesh Phogat earned a nomination in 2019. Neeraj Chopra was shortlisted for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in 2022 following his Olympic javelin gold medal success.
