Tamim Iqbal becomes BCB president unopposed after election sweep

FORMER BANGLADESH CAPTAIN Tamim Iqbal has officially become president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after securing a dominant victory in the board elections and subsequently being elected unopposed to the organization’s top post.

The 37-year-old becomes the youngest president in BCB history, marking a major transition from one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers to the country’s most powerful cricket administrator.

The election was held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, where Tamim emerged as the highest vote-getter among candidates contesting for board directorships. In the crucial Category-2 election representing Dhaka-based cricket clubs, Tamim received 73 votes, comfortably topping a field of 16 candidates competing for 12 director positions. After the directors were elected, no rival candidate challenged his nomination for the presidency, allowing him to be elected unopposed.

Tamim’s election formalizes a leadership role he had already been performing since April 2026. Earlier this year, Bangladesh’s National Sports Council dissolved the previous BCB board following an investigation into alleged irregularities in the October 2025 elections. The government then appointed Tamim to head an 11-member ad-hoc committee tasked with overseeing the board and preparing for fresh elections. The latest vote effectively converts his interim leadership into a full elected mandate, giving him authority to guide Bangladesh cricket through the next four-year cycle.

At 37 years old, Tamim becomes the youngest individual ever to lead the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He is also among the few former national team captains to move directly into the board’s highest office shortly after retirement from international cricket. His appointment continues a remarkable career trajectory that saw him become Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in One-Day Internationals and one of the country’s most accomplished batters across all formats.

Following the board’s first meeting after the election, Fahim Sinha was appointed vice-president of the BCB. The election also completed the formation of a 25-member board that will oversee cricket administration, domestic competitions, commercial operations, and national team development.
