ECB rejects Lord’s final proposal; setback to Euro Nations Cup plans: report

PLANS TO LAUNCH the proposed Euro Nations Cup have suffered a significant setback after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declined to approve a proposal to stage the tournament final at Lord’s.

The decision has forced organisers to reassess the competition’s launch strategy as they seek to establish a flagship European cricket tournament for both men’s and women’s teams, according to a report by BBC Sport’s Timothy Abraham.

The Euro Nations Cup has been conceived as a new multi-nation competition aimed at increasing the profile of cricket across Europe while providing regular high-quality international competition outside the traditional ICC event calendar. Organisers had hoped that hosting the final at Lord’s, widely regarded as the “Home of Cricket”, would provide the tournament with immediate prestige, attract broadcasters and sponsors, and boost spectator interest.

However, the ECB has opted not to support the proposal, preventing organisers from using Lord’s as the venue for the championship match. While the board has not publicly detailed the reasons behind its decision, the rejection represents a major obstacle to the competition’s original vision and commercial positioning.

The proposed tournament is intended to feature leading European cricket nations across both the men’s and women’s games, creating a recurring continental competition similar to regional championships seen in other sports.

The inability to secure Lord’s as the showcase venue is expected to have commercial implications. Lord’s remains one of cricket’s most iconic stadiums and has long been associated with major international finals, including ICC tournaments and high-profile bilateral matches. Its inclusion would likely have enhanced the tournament’s marketability, sponsorship value and broadcast appeal.

Despite the setback, discussions around the Euro Nations Cup are expected to continue. Organisers are understood to be exploring alternative venues and formats that could allow the competition to proceed while maintaining its objective of creating a sustainable European cricket property.
