THE MAHARASHTRA GOVERNMENT has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kolhapur District Cricket Association (KDCA) to develop an international-standard cricket stadium in Kolhapur, marking a major boost for sports infrastructure in western Maharashtra.
The proposed 35,000-capacity venue will be designed as a multi-sports hub, capable of hosting international cricket matches as well as a range of other sporting and community events.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior state government officials and representatives of the Kolhapur District Cricket Association. The project is part of the state’s broader vision to strengthen sports infrastructure beyond Mumbai and Pune and position Maharashtra as a leading destination for national and international sporting events.
According to the state government, the stadium will be developed to meet international standards prescribed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). Once completed, it will be equipped to host domestic tournaments, Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, international fixtures and other marquee sporting events, subject to approvals from the relevant governing bodies.
The proposed complex will extend beyond cricket and function as a multi-sports centre. Plans include facilities for indoor and outdoor sports, athlete training centres, fitness and sports science infrastructure, practice grounds and community recreational spaces. The integrated approach is aimed at promoting grassroots sports while creating a year-round sporting destination for athletes and spectators.
The project is expected to significantly enhance Kolhapur’s sporting ecosystem. The city has a rich sporting tradition, particularly in wrestling, athletics and cricket, and the new venue is expected to provide local athletes with access to world-class infrastructure while creating opportunities to host high-profile domestic and international competitions.
Government officials said the stadium would also generate substantial economic benefits for the region. Large sporting events are expected to boost tourism, hospitality, transportation and retail sectors, while the construction phase is likely to create employment opportunities and stimulate investment in supporting infrastructure around the venue.
The initiative aligns with India’s wider push to expand world-class sports infrastructure as the country prepares to host a series of major international events and strengthens its bid to stage the 2036 Olympic Games. Several states have accelerated investments in stadiums, training centres and high-performance facilities to meet growing demand for modern sporting infrastructure.
For the Kolhapur District Cricket Association, the project represents a significant milestone in its efforts to establish the city as a regular host for elite cricket. While Kolhapur has previously staged domestic matches, the new stadium would provide the scale and facilities required for international fixtures and major franchise competitions.
