JAMSHEDPUR FC HAVE requested additional time from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to decide on their participation in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL), becoming the latest club to seek clarity as Indian football transitions to a new club-led operating model.
The club has asked for an extension until July 31 to provide a definitive response to the AIFF regarding its participation in the 2026–27 season, a report in The Times of India said. The AIFF had earlier directed all 14 ISL clubs to pay the first instalment of the participation fee, Rs 55 lakh, by July 20 to confirm their participation in the league. The payment forms part of the new financial framework adopted following the transition of the ISL to a club-led commercial structure, under which clubs will collectively manage the league’s commercial operations while the AIFF retains regulatory oversight.
According to reports, Jamshedpur FC has informed the AIFF that it requires additional time before committing to the new model. While the club has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind its request, it is understood to be evaluating the financial and operational implications of participating under the revised governance structure.
The development comes at a crucial juncture for the ISL, which is preparing for its first season under a club-led model after the AIFF and the league’s 14 clubs agreed to jointly manage the competition’s commercial rights. The new structure is intended to provide clubs with greater control over revenues, sponsorships and long-term strategic planning while creating a more financially sustainable league.
Jamshedpur FC’s request follows reports that most other ISL clubs have already completed the initial participation formalities, allowing preparations for the new season to continue. League organisers are expected to wait for Jamshedpur’s final decision before confirming the full list of participating teams and finalising operational plans for the competition.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its ISL participation, Jamshedpur FC has continued preparations for the domestic season. The club has strengthened its squad ahead of the Durand Cup with three new signings and recently became one of the few clubs in India to receive the AIFF Five-Star Academy Accreditation, underlining its continued investment in football development.
Owned by Tata Steel, Jamshedpur FC has been a member of the ISL since its inception in 2017 and won the League Winners’ Shield in the 2021–22 season. The club remains one of Indian football’s strongest institutional brands, with a growing focus on youth development and grassroots infrastructure.
