MUMBAI: Tata Group was on Thursday announced as title sponsor of the upcoming Women’s Premier League, with Tata Capital, the financial services arm of the salt to software conglomerate, and Tata Motors “also joining”.
The rights tenure is for five years and runs from February 15 2023 to July 31 2027, or until 30 days after the completion of WPL Season 2027.
The inaugural edition of the Tata WPL is scheduled to take place between March 4th and March 26th and will be played in Mumbai across two venues – Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium.
It bears noting that the Tata Group had last year replaced Chinese smartphone company Vivo as title sponsor for the Indian Premier League.
Tata Capital has always demonstrated its commitment towards diversity and inclusion in all spheres including sports. The women’s cricket team of India has seen success at a global level and brought a new spirit amongst young girls to dream of a career as cricketers. This sponsorship aims to further foster the enthusiasm and immense support that Indians have shown towards our women’s cricket team.
Speaking on the partnership, Rajiv Sabharwal, managing director and CEO, Tata Capital, said, “We are delighted to be associated with the Women’s Premier League. Women’s sports are becoming increasingly popular in India, and we feel this will only grow with time. We hope that our partnership with BCCI for WPL will help provide the opportunity to promote women’s cricket by continuing to attract the best talent. We also believe that such initiatives will help build a team of cricketing champions.”
The sale of the tournament’s media rights to Reliance-controlled Network18 had fetched the BCCI Rs 951 crore and the five teams were sold for combined Rs 4,700 crore. At the players auction held earlier this month Indian opener Smriti Mandhana was the most expensive buy, going to Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 3.4 crore.
