THE HAGUE: Dutch chess player of Indian origin Anish Giri won the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023 in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands on Sunday.
Anish Giri, five times the runner-up in Wijk aan Zee, won the 85th edition of Tata Steel Chess after pouncing on a blunder by Richard Rapport, finishing with 8.5 points. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and Norwegian world champion Magnus Carlsen ended joint second with 8 points.
In the 13th and final round of the 85th edition of the tournament at the Dutch west coast, the runner-up in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 won playing with white against Romanian Richard Rapport.
Giri took over the title from Carlsen, who has won eight times in Wijk aan Zee.
28-year-old grandmaster Giri had a strong tournament, remained unbeaten and beat both world No. 1 Carlsen and world No. 2 Ding Liren on his way to capturing the title.
