The Glazer family, who have put up Manchester United for sale, are reportedly looking for a world record price for a sports franchise from prospective buyers.
ESPN, quoting sources “close to the process”, reports that while Forbes puts the Premier League giants’ valuation at £3.8 billion ($4.59bn), the Glazers believe they can attract offers in excess of £6bn ($7.25bn).
For the record, Chelsea fetched £2.5bn ($3.02bn) and the Denver Broncos £3.85bn ($4.65bn) when they were both sold earlier this year.
Pertinently, in a joint statement issued Tuesday, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer had said: “We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future. Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”
There is an expectation that many of the same parties who took part in the process to buy Chelsea will register their interest.
A new name has however cropped up. If a report in the UK media is to be believed, Tech titans Apple, whose net worth is placed at a monstrous £2 trillion, have emerged as potential new owners of the iconic football club.
