RIL refutes report that Mukesh Ambani among Liverpool suitors

LONDON: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Sunday denied a report in a leading English daily that it’s chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani has entered the race to take over Premier League club Liverpool FC.

UK’s Mirror Sport had on Saturday ‘exclusively’ reported that Liverpool FC, which has been put on the market for sale by its owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG)for a reported minimum bid of £‎4 billion, had been approached by Ambani.

However, when contacted by IANS, RIL denied any interest in purchasing Liverpool FC.

It is not the first time Ambani has been linked with Liverpool though, after eyeing a takeover bid in 2010 before FSG purchased the iconic club.

In 2010 Subrata Roy of Sahara Group and Ambani were reportedly lining up a bid to purchase a 51% stake in the club from former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Ambani currently owns IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and also holds commercial rights to the Indian Super League (ISL), the top tier of Indian club football.
