MUMBAI: The Indian cricket board’s annual general meeting and elections, which will take place here on October 18, will be a mere formality, with the results pre-determined.
As expected, Sourav Ganguly will not continue to serve as BCCI president. In his place comes Roger Binny, member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, multiple media reports confirmed Tuesday.
Binny, who has served as the head of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), confirmed that he is filing his nomination on Tuesday.
Another development that comes as no surprise is the ruling BJP’s domination of all critical positions (barring that of president) in the new power structure, which will be made official on October 18. Ever since the Supreme Court relaxed the cooling off period, the only speculation really was around whether BCCI secretary Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, would take over as the president. But Jay Shah, already the most powerful official in BCCI’s present dispensation, will be carrying that forward and continuing in his current position.
Key BCCI posts
President – Roger Binny
Secretary – Jay Shah
Treasurer – Ashish Shelar (Mumbai BJP president)
Joint secretary – Devajit Saikia (Advocate General of Assam)
IPL chairman – Arun Dhumal (brother of Anurag Thakur, Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs and Minister of Information and Broadcasting)
Dalmiya in IPL Governing Council
Avishek Dalmiya has been inducted into the IPL Governing Council. The son of late Jagmohan Dalmiya, Avishek was not the official representative of Cricket Association of Bengal in the AGM. But the constitution allows a non-representative to become an elected member of the Governing Council.
Meanwhile, Rajeev Shukla, who was lobbying for the top IPL job, will have to be satisfied with continuing as BCCI vice-president.
