MUMBAI: The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be the biggest ever earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). That is stating the obvious no doubt.
It boggles the mind therefore what the richest and least accountable cricket body in the world will rake in from its golden goose once the new media rights contract has been signed for the 2023 edition on.
Returning to IPL 2022 and what the BCCI stands to earn. The transfer of title sponsor rights from Vivo to Tata and the addition of RuPay as the sixth official partner is expected to bolster central sponsorship revenue even further. Add in the income from Disney Star as media rights payment and what we’re looking at is a monster pay day that totes up to all of Rs 4,710.35 cr (Rs 47.1 billion, $616 million).
It breaks down thus:
As per the contract between BCCI and Disney Star, the board received 25% (Rs 4086.87 crore) of the media rights payment in FY19 and was to receive 18.75% (Rs 3065.15 crore) each in the subsequent years. For the record, Star India had committed to pay Rs 16347.5 crore to acquire IPL media rights for five years till 2022. But that was at a calculation of 60 games per season.
With this edition having 74 games due to the addition of two new franchises from Ahmedabad and Lucknow respectively, the figure concomitantly goes up to Rs 3,780.35 cr.
As for central revenue sponsors they collectively pay the BCCI Rs 930 cr.
