Mumbai could host entire IPL, BCCI mulls Mar 25 start: Report

MUMBAI: The country-wide surge of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has reportedly got the BCCI working on Plan B to host the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League entirely in Mumbai. The start of the IPL could also be advanced by a week.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI currently has two routes in front of it. First being the initial plan to have all 10 teams playing the home-away format, with the home games being held at their respective stadiums. The second option being activating the three venues in Mumbai (the Wankhede, CCI and DY Patil Stadium) for the entire season for all teams.

While the BCCI had opted to stage the last two seasons (one full and one partly) in UAE due to Covid, taking the entire league out of India isn’t even being considered as an option this time.

The board is also contemplating changing the start date of the new season from April 02 to March 25 in order to reduce the number of double-headers and day games that was initially planned.
