AFC plans Nations League to strengthen int’l structure

ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION (AFC) has announced plans to introduce an AFC Nations League in the coming period, as part of its wider efforts to enhance development opportunities for its Member Associations (MAs) and create a more structured and sustainable framework for international football.

Aligned with its long-term vision to advance the game across Asia, the AFC continues to prioritise the delivery of consistent development pathways for its Member Associations. However, according to the media release, the effective use of FIFA International Match Windows has become increasingly difficult due to limited availability of suitable opponents, rising operational costs and growing logistical challenges, which have often reduced the overall sporting value of international fixtures.

These factors have underscored the need for a more predictable and sustainable competition model for national teams. Following an extensive internal review and consultation process, the Confederation has therefore decided, in principle, to introduce an AFC Nations League.

The proposed tournament is designed to ensure regular and meaningful international matches during FIFA International Match Windows, promote competitive balance through tier-based match-ups, enhance cost efficiency via centralised coordination, and establish clearer progression pathways for national teams.

Further details relating to the competition format, timelines and implementation will be discussed through the relevant AFC committees and stakeholder consultations, with formal announcements to follow in due course.

AFC general secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John said, “The AFC Nations League represents an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to support the development of our 47 Member Associations. By introducing a structured competition platform during the FIFA International Match Windows, with greater calendar stability and clear sporting incentives, we aim to ensure consistent access to high-quality matches while addressing logistical and cost-related challenges faced by National Teams. In addition to the sporting benefits, we have also seen strong interest and growing demand from our commercial partners for a Nations League-style competition, reflecting its appeal to fans, broadcasters and stakeholders alike and its ability to deliver a more compelling and marketable international football product.”
