MUMBAI: Global e-retail giant Amazon could soon take on big sports apparel names like Nike and Lululemon.
The company is working with known sportswear-makers’ suppliers and manufacturers, and although the project is still in early stages, it has started ordering small batches of products as part of the trial, according to a Bloomberg report.
The report claims that while Amazon has not signed any long term contracts yet, the first such batches have already been shipped to the company in August 2017. One of its suppliers, says the report, is Taiwanese vendor Makalot Industrial Co, known for making clothes sold by Uniqlo, Gap and Kohl’s. The other Taiwanese company Amazon is reportedly working with is Eclat Textile Co, which also manufactures clothing for Nike, Lululemon and Under Armour.
Amazon has earlier forayed into fashion and clothing, but this is its first foray into the sportswear segment. This could probably be inspired by brands not choosing to sell certain items on Amazon, making the company search for avenues to provide them on its own.
