Arsenal signs Olivia Smith for record transfer fee of $1.34 million

LONDON: Olivia Smith has overtaken Naomi Girma to become the most expensive player in women’s football, following a transfer fee of $1.34 million.

Arsenal have signed the Canadian forward on a four-year deal from Liverpool, where she joined last year. Smith also holds the distinction of being Canada’s youngest-ever international, having made her senior debut at the age of 15 in 2019.

Reflecting on the move, Smith said, “It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.”

Despite the record-breaking nature of this transfer, figures in the women’s game still trail far behind those in men’s football — Neymar remains the most expensive signing in history following his $262 million move from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.
