JOSEP MARIA BARTOMEU announced his resignation Tuesday as the president of FC Barcelona and that of the rest of directors.
He also stated that The Board of Directors have approved the acceptance of requirements to take part in a future European SUPERLEAGUE of clubs, a project put forward by the biggest clubs in Europe which would guarantee the financial stability of the club.
“And I also wish to announce that we have approved the future new format for the Clubs World Cup,” he added.
His resignation means avoiding a vote of no confidence, which was due to be held next month after some 20,000 fans signed a petition demanding that he step down.
Bartomeu called the government’s decision irresponsible in his speech, while thanking the club and saying he could not have resigned earlier because they could not leave the club in the hands of an interim board with limited powers in order to guarantee the sustainability of the club.
Victor Font and Joan Laporta are among the candidates expected to run to be Bartomeu’s successor.
