MUMBAI: Close on the heels of reports emerging that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had asked its general manager – Cricket Operations – Saba Karim to resign from his post, the former India wicketkeeper has done just that.
The BCCI had appointed the former Indian wicketkeeper to the position in December 2017.
Karim, who was appointed in December 2017 to succeed MV Sridhar, sent in his resignation on Saturday to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and board president Sourav Ganguly, and will be serving out his notice period, Indian Express reports.
As per his contract, Karim has a notice period of six months unless the BCCI, while accepting his resignation, advances his exit date, ESPNcricinfo reports.
“We have received his resignation; he will serve his notice period. The board will look out for a new GM in cricket operation. The Apex Council has given powers to office bearers to fill up the post,” a board official told Indian Express.
Karim’s major role involved the smooth running of domestic cricket and it was his idea to have Rahul Dravid as head of cricket for the National Cricket Academy. He has also been instrumental in planning and overseeing back up India A tours that have helped Team India achieve success overseas.
However, he had come under criticism from several quarters of the new regime for the handling of the NCA, domestic tournaments, outsourcing of scheduling and appointments, apart from lack of Team India players being a part of it.
Karim’s resignation comes just days after BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri was relieved from his post, and Indian Premier League COO Hemang Amin appointed as interim CEO.
