Bradman’s Baggy Green cap sets new auction record

A BAGGY GREEN CAP worn by Sir Don Bradman during Australia’s 1947-48 series against India has been sold for A$460,000 at a Gold Coast auction, setting a new record for a cap worn by the Australian batter.

Bradman had gifted the cap to Indian cricketer Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni, and it remained carefully preserved by Sohoni’s family for more than 75 years.

Lloyds Auctioneers and Valuers chief operating officer Lee Hames said, “That’s over three generations under lock and key. If you were a family member you were only allowed to look at it when you were 16 years old for five minutes.”

The cap was purchased by an anonymous bidder and is expected to be displayed at an Australian museum. It remains in good condition and bears the inscriptions “D.G. Bradman” and “S.W. Sohoni” on the inside.

Once the buyer’s premium of 16.5 per cent (A$75,900) is included, the total sale price rises to A$535,900. This surpasses the previous record, held by another Baggy Green from the same 1947–48 India series, which was sold in 2024. By contrast, a different Bradman cap from that year damaged by sun exposure and insects fetched A$311,000 at auction in 2024.
