In a continuing travesty of governance norms in sports administration in the country, Karan Bhushan Singh, son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the “former” (only as a fig leaf) czar of the Wrestling Federation of India, has assumed the presidency of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association (UPWA).
Karan, already serving as UPWA senior vice president, was “unanimously” elected to replace his father.
And as was the the case in the WFI, Brij Bhushan, a ruling BJP Member of Parliament from UP who has been accused of multiple counts of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, has already served three terms as UPWA chief and was therefore ineligible to contest as per the National Sports Development Code.
It is worth noting that the UPWA annual general meeting (AGM) to anoint Karan as the new association chief was chaired on Sunday by Brij Bhushan loyalist and suspended WFI president Sanjay Kumar Singh ‘Babloo’.
The results of the UPWA AGM, which was held in Nandini Nagar, Gonda, the pocket borough of the six-time ruling party MP, was always a foregone conclusion.
