BWF unveils comprehensive 2027–28 World Tour calendar; India Open shifted

THE BADMINTON WORLD FEDERATION (BWF) has announced its 2027–28 World Tour calendar, introducing key scheduling changes aimed at improving player welfare and the overall presentation of the sport. Among the most notable developments is the rescheduling of the India Open Super 750, which will move from its traditional January slot to February 2–7, 2027, before returning to late January in 2028.

The revised calendar features a 35-tournament global circuit spanning January to December, with events ranging from Super 100 to Super 1000 level, culminating in the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals.

India’s premier badminton tournament, the India Open Super 750, will be held at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from February 2 to 7, 2027. The tournament will then return to its customary late-January window, scheduled for January 25–30, 2028.

The schedule adjustment comes after the 2026 edition attracted criticism from several leading international players, who raised concerns over poor air quality in Delhi, low indoor temperatures and hygiene standards at the venue. While the BWF has not explicitly linked the date change to those complaints, the revised calendar reflects its broader effort to create better playing conditions for athletes.

The 2027–28 calendar introduces several structural changes to the World Tour.

The circuit will continue to feature five Super 1000 tournaments across Asia and Europe. These elite events will now be staged over 11 days across two weekends, allowing for improved scheduling and greater recovery time for players. The revamped format includes a 48-player singles draw featuring a group stage followed by knockout rounds, while doubles events will retain a 32-pair knockout draw. The BWF also confirmed that every match from Super 1000 tournaments will be broadcast globally, increasing the sport’s international reach.

In addition, the federation has confirmed that all World Tour events from January 2027 will adopt the new 3×15 scoring system, replacing the long-standing 3×21 format as part of efforts to modernise badminton and enhance the spectator experience.

Apart from the India Open, India’s tournament calendar also sees a significant change with the Syed Modi India International being downgraded from a Super 300 event to Super 100 status.

The Lucknow-based tournament will be held from July 27 to August 1, 2027, and July 25 to 30, 2028, remaining an important stop for emerging international players despite the reduction in ranking status.

Explaining the rationale behind the revised calendar, BWF President **Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul** said the governing body had prioritised the needs of athletes. She said the updated schedule and extended competition windows are intended to provide better playing conditions, more balanced scheduling and increased recovery time, helping players perform consistently while extending their careers.

The release of the 2027–28 calendar marks the beginning of a new phase for international badminton, with changes extending beyond scheduling to include competition formats and scoring. For India, the temporary shift of the India Open to February is expected to provide a more favourable tournament window, while the event retains its prestigious Super 750 status and continues to be one of the flagship stops on the BWF World Tour.
