GUWAHATI: For the first time in the Hero Indian Super League’s history, the upcoming game between NorthEast United FC and Bengaluru FC, scheduled here for Wednesday, will be played behind closed doors.
This is a fallout of the massive protests in the state in particular, and across the country as a whole, that followed the passage into law of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by both Houses of Parliament.
Sporting activities took a hit in Guwahati last week after an ISL game and a Ranji Trophy cricket match were suspended on October 12 because of curfew.
NorthEast United’s earlier home match against Chennaiyin FC here was postponed after the host city was placed under a curfew following protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
ISL promoters Football Sports Development Limited issued the following statement on the matter: “Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) Match 40 in Guwahati between NorthEast United FC and Bengaluru FC, scheduled on Wednesday, 18th December will now be played behind closed doors.
“The decision has been taken by Football Sports Development Limited after due consultation and guidance from the city authorities. The League holds safety of fans, players and staff of paramount importance, which has led to this decision.”
Guwahati had plunged into chaos last week following the massive protests against the CAA, with the authorities placing the state under curfew on December 11 night and blacking out internet services till Tuesday, December 17.
Peaceful protests are continuing in Guwahati and other places, which explains FSDL’s decision to play the game in an empty stadium.
