CBI raids SAI HQ, arrests director, 5 others in graft case

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday arrested six Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials including its director Sanjay Kumar Sharma under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

A CBI official told IANS that it had received information about SAI officials in the transport department accepting bribes worth Rs 57000 to clear bills worth Rs 1.9 million.

“On getting the information, we laid a trap and arrested them red-handed,” the official said.

SAI director general Neelam Kapoor told ANI: “There is zero tolerance for corruption in SAI. We will support any action against corruption.”

Following the development, Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore took to his Twitter handle to announce the central government’s zero tolerance attitude towards corruption.

“We, as a govt, are committed to a corruption-free India. That’s why when we found out corrupt practices by a few officers in @IndiaSports, we gave their info to relevant agencies, who arrested them today. We will continue to have zero tolerance approach towards corruption @PMOIndia,” the minister tweeted.
