Conflicted’ Ganguly to step down from ATK Mohun Bagan role

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly will step down from the board of ATK Mohun Bagan FC after RPSG Ventures won the bid for the Lucknow franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a record Rs 7,090 crores.

Ganguly has reportedly initiated the process of standing down from his role at the Indian Super League football franchise as RPSG is now not only the owner of the as-yet-unnamed Lucknow IPL franchise, but also principal stakeholder in the storied Kolkata football club.

For Ganguly, the issue of conflict of interest has arisen because the former Team India captain is not only a director on the Mohun Bagan board, but also a shareholder. If Ganguly carried on occupying the positions both at the BCCI and Mohun Bagan, he would fall foul of the `direct or indirect interest` conflict rule under the BCCI constitution.

“Well, I think he is going to step down from Mohun Bagan completely… I think today (Tuesday),” RPSG vice-chairman Sanjiv Goenka had told CNBC TV18. “It is for Sourav to make the announcement. I mean, sorry. I think I pre-empted it.

The billion rupee question is whether “completely” also includes Ganguly giving up his stakeholding in ATK Mohun Bagan.
