Covid-19 outbreak: BWF puts off 2 more Oly qualifiers

MUMBAI: Close on the heels of the Badminton World Federation postponing the Vietnam International Challenge 2020, due to continued concerns over the Covid-19 outbreak, the BWF has postponed the YONEX German Open 2020 and the Polish Open 2020 – further reducing the number of Olympic qualifiers.

The German Open and Polish Open were scheduled to be held from March 3 to 8 in Mulheim and from March 26 to 29 in Krakow respectively, but on Wednesday the sport’s world gpoverning body confirmed that both hosts had postponed the tournaments.

While the German Open is a Super 300 event on the HSBC BWF World Tour as well as being an Olympic qualifier, the Polish Opens is also an Olympic qualifying tournaments.

The one-year Olympic qualifying period for badminton ends on April 30.

A few other tournaments, scheduled in February, have already been postponed and shuttlers are now left with fewer events in order to qualify for Tokyo 2020.
