Covid surge forces promoters to call off 1st WBC India C’ship

NEW DELHI: Bowing to the inevitable, the first-ever Indian Championship fight, which had been endorsed by the the World Boxing Council (WBC), has been called off.  

The WBC India Championship fight, between the country’s top women boxers Chandni Mehra and Suman Kumari, which when it was announced had been billed as a game changer for professional boxing in the country, had been scheduled for May 1 at the Great Khali Academy in Jalandhar, Punjab.

“Unfortunately, due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases across India and guidelines issued by the Indian government, we have decided to postpone the first-ever WBC India Championship event to a later date,” Parm Goraya, CEO of LZ Promotions, the event promoter, stated on Friday.
