SYDNEY: Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Monday the formation of the national Premier Cricket Twenty20 event, a competition in the T20 format that will be played amongst 10 teams from across the country, that will represent all states and territories.
The city of Adelaide will be hosting the tournament, which is scheduled for March 5-6, 2019.
A women’s competition of the same is expected to be launched in 2020.
New South Wales and Victoria will be sending two teams, while South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory will feature with a team from each region.
The idea behind the tournament is for youngsters to showcase their talent for competitions such as the Big Bash League. Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft are expected to participate in the competition to make a strong case for their national selection once their 1-year ban is lifted during the same month.
The tournament also makes Cricket Australia’s strategy to focus on T20 cricket evident, with one of their goals being to win the World T20 on home soil in 2020.
