JOHANNESBURG: After months of controversy and much deliberation, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has finalized a new domestic T20 competition from 9 November to 16 December this year.
The board members’ council voted unanimously in favour for it.
Commercial and other related details such as the franchises, matches and hosting venues are currently being finalised and the board will release them shortly. This competition will be contested by 6 teams across 30 home and away matches followed by one eliminator match and the grand finale.
Supersport, South Africa’s top sports broadcaster, which had earlier rejected CSA’s offer of purchasing a 49% stake in the competition, will be coming on board as its official media partner.
“Chief executive Thabang Moroe and his management team have come with a commercial model that is both financially viable and offers promise for an exciting and long-term future that meets all the conditions laid down by the CSA board of directors. The board had no hesitation in recommending this model to the members council,” CSA president and chairman, Chris Nenzani said.
It will be interesting to see the response of the owners of teams in the now-defunct T20 Global League, many of whom are reportedly planning to take legal action against CSA for scrapping the competition without any notice and not compensating them for the same.
