PUNE: Indian Super League franchise FC Pune City have removed Miguel Angel Portugal as its head coach after the team’s flop show in the first three matches of the 2018-19 edition. Portugal was named for the top job prior to the start of the season. As a result, Pradyum Reddy, the technical director of the team, will take over as the interim coach until further notice.
Pune confirmed the development on its Twitter handle: ‘The club have relieved Miguel Angel Portugal from his duties as the Head Coach of the club. All the best for the future. #OneTeamOneDream’
The Spaniard’s poor coaching record in the ISL continues as he also served as the head coach for Delhi Dynamos FC last season, in which the Lions finished 8th despite being unbeaten in eight of their last 11 matches.
After a brief stint with Spanish club Granada CF, he came back to India to replace Ranko Popovic as Pune’s head coach.
However, Portugal’s exit seems to have made no immediate difference to the team’s fortunes, as it succumbed to a 2-4 defeat in an away game to FC Goa, extending their winless streak to four games.
