Gambhir foregoes entire IPL 2018 salary

MUMBAI: In what is possibly a first in the history of the Indian Premier League, Gautam Gambhir has announced that he won’t be charging a single penny for the IPL 2018 following Delhi Daredevils’ horrendous run in the season so far.

Gambhir stepped down as captain of the Daredevils after his side lost 5 of the 6 matches they have played in. The 36-year-old Delhi batsman himself has had a tough time, scoring a mere 85 runs in this period.

“Gautam has decided that he won’t take any salary from the franchise for the season. He will play the remaining part of IPL for the Delhi Daredevils for free,” PTI, quoting an anonymous source close to the development, reported Wednesday.

“Gautam is someone who puts pride above everything else. He has been a proud performer. He doesn’t want to take any money and it’s a very personal call. In fact, he wanted to quit just after the KXIP game,” the source told the newswire.

This move fuels further speculation on the veteran batsman’s career. Gambhir hasn’t played for India since the end of 2016 and only features in domestic cricket matches. He is expected to take a call on his future after the end of the competition, while maintaining that he will be available for selection.

“I don’t know, it’s too early for me to decide on that. Let me sit down and decide. I have to think where my game goes and I go as an individual,” Gambhir had said recently during a media interaction.
