MUMBAI: “It’s official – @SGanguly99 formally elected as the President of BCCI.” The post from the official Twitter handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced here Wednesday that former India captain Sourav Ganguly had taken over as the 39th president of the world’s richest cricket body.

The 47-year-old Ganguly was officially entrusted with the task of heading Indian cricket for the next nine months at the BCCI’s general body meeting here, ending the sorry 33-month reign of the Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators (CoA).

Ganguly’s “election” (more like appointment) was finalised last week after the all-clear from the country’s second most powerful politician – Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Joining Ganguly on the BCCI’s new leadership team is Shah’s son Jay, who has been made secretary and former BCCI president and current junior finance minister Anurag Thakur’s younger brother Arun Dhumal, the new treasurer.
