NEW DELHI: Retired Team India cricketer Harbhajan Singh is among five nominees selected by the Aam Aadmi Party for Rajya Sabha or the Upper House of Parliament from Punjab, where the party won a gigantic victory in recent assembly elections.
Elections for five Rajya Sabha seats that are falling vacant from Punjab on April 9 are set for March 31.
Harbhajan Singh, 41, who filed his nomination as an AAP candidate on Monday, was seen in a yellow turban, inspired by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann seated next to him.
“After making India Proud as a bowling legend, Mr. Turbanator is now going to raise his voice for the people of Punjab in Parliament,” AAP tweeted, sharing a video.
Speaking to The Tribune, Harbhajan said: “He has been entrusted a responsibility and he will fulfill it, most of all he will promote sports.”
AAP’s Punjab co-in-charge Raghav Chadha, IIT Delhi assistant professor Sandeep Pathak, founder of Lovely Professional University Ashok Mittal and Ludhiana-based textile businessman Sanjeev Arora are the other choices the party has picked for nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
The last date for filing of nomination for five RS seats from Punjab is Tuesday; scrutiny will happen on March 22 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 24.
AAP is set to win all five seats falling vacant.
