FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, widely credited with revolutionising women’s sport in India, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the next edition of the tournament, scheduled for 2029, will be expanded to include ten teams.
The ICC had first announced its plans to grow the women’s game on International Women’s Day in 2021, and a recent statement reaffirmed the board’s commitment to the growth of women’s cricket in the wake of the record-breaking 2025 edition.
Since 2000, the Women’s ODI World Cup has featured only eight teams. The expanded 2029 tournament will see ten sides competing across 48 matches, a significant increase from the 31 games played in the most recent edition.
The ICC also confirmed that next year’s Women’s T20 World Cup will feature 12 teams, up from the 10 that participated in the last edition in the UAE.
“Nearly 300,000 fans watched the event in stadia breaking the record for tournament attendance for any women’s Cricket event. The tournament also witnessed viewership growth and new records being set for on-screen audiences across the world with nearly 500 million viewers in India,” the ICC release said.
