ICC suspends Cricket Canada funding amid financial oversight issues

CRICKET CANADA is under pressure after the ICC froze funding to the national governing body over governance, financial oversight, and compliance failures. The ICC has issued a formal notice warning the organisation it could permanently lose access to ICC funding unless multiple issues are resolved within six months.

ICC funding accounts for approximately 63% of Cricket Canada’s annual revenue, with the organisation reporting more than C$3.6 million (approx. US$2.63 million) from the ICC in its 2024 financial filings, a report in cricexec said.. The ICC raised concerns over inaccurate budget submissions, including indications that Cricket Canada was still expecting Sport Canada funding despite it having been withdrawn, and questioned legal cost disclosures after court proceedings suggested expenses could approach C$460,000, well above previously declared figures.

The funding freeze follows broader governance issues, including allegations of financial irregularities, leadership disputes, selection interference, and anti-corruption concerns. A British Columbia court ruling also criticised the organisation over prolonged internal litigation.

Arvinder Khosa was formally elected President at Cricket Canada’s annual general meeting after a court-ordered meeting led to the removal of former President Amjad Bajwa earlier this year. Vice-President Ranjit Chaudhri acknowledged governance issues but disputed deliberate wrongdoing, while Media Manager Jimmy Sharma said the current board “is fully committed to resolving all governance, compliance, and financial control deficiencies.”
