India’s golf landscape is set for a transformation as young players from six northern states compete for the inaugural Golf Sixes Junior Tournament.
The tournament, which teed off at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurugram on Monday, is being organised by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) in collaboration with The R&A, the global governing body for golf rules.
The competition will feature two players each from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Targeting players aged 12 and under, the initiative seeks to foster young talent and popularise the sport at the grassroots level.
IGU president Brijinder Singh, in an official statement, emphasised the potential impact of this condensed format.
“Just as T20 revolutionised cricket by shortening the game and making it more dynamic and spectator-friendly, this new format of golf does the same,” he said.
“It condenses the sport into a more exciting and engaging experience, allowing a new generation to enjoy the thrill of the game in a shorter time frame. Similarly, Six-Hole Golf could capture the attention of younger players and audiences, potentially driving a significant rise in the sport’s popularity,” Singh added.
The introduction of Golf Sixes aligns with global efforts to modernise the sport and attract younger participants.
While traditional golf remains a longer, more strategic game, proponents believe that shorter formats will play a key role in ensuring the sport’s wider appeal and accessibility among the next generation of players.
Golf Sixes has been embraced in various regions worldwide.
Notable instances include:
UAE: The Golf Sixes League has seen significant participation, with events held under the lights at venues like Yas Acres Golf Club.
Teams from clubs such as Abu Dhabi City Golf Club and Yas Links Golf Club have actively competed, aiming to introduce young players to the sport in a fun and inclusive environment.
South Africa: The Cape Town Sixes Festival incorporated a Golf Sixes event at the King David Mowbray Golf Club.
This tournament featured unique attractions like roaming beer keg golf carts and glow-in-the-dark golf balls, aiming to make the game more engaging and enjoyable for participants.
Nigeria: Golf Sixes Nigeria debuted at the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club in Abuja.
The event targeted senior amateur players aged 55 and above, promoting the sport among seasoned golfers in a friendly yet competitive environment.
