India ‘blunders’ its way to No.1 ICC Test team status… for 2 hours

A blunder it was. But one likely triggered in some part at least by the overweening eagerness of cricket’s global governing body to trumpet big news concerning the game’s financial centre.

Back to the blunder. Team India were handed a moment of joy on Tuesday afternoon when they found themselves at the top of the ICC Test rankings.

Even as congratulatory tweets began pouring in, after two hours Australia were back at the top of the rankings chart. India’s short-lived reign at the top was a result of a major goof-up on the ICC website as neither India nor Australia are presently part of any Test series. For the record, India is slated to play host to Australia in the upcoming four-Test Border-Gavaskar series from February 9 onwards.

It bears noting that if India win the upcoming Test series by a margin of 2-0 or more, they can indeed topple Australia.

Which brings us back to our initial musings. This looks like one of those “technical glitches” brought on by overeagerness… What say?
