THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC) has confirmed that the host of the 2036 Summer Olympics will be selected in mid-2029, ending months of uncertainty over the bidding process and providing a clearer roadmap for countries vying to stage the Games.
The decision marks a major shift under IOC President Kirsty Coventry, who has pushed for a more transparent and competitive host-selection system.
The announcement is particularly significant for countries such as India and Qatar, which are among the leading contenders for the 2036 Games and have been awaiting clarity after the IOC paused the process in 2025 for a comprehensive review.
A Return to Competitive Voting
The IOC’s revised timetable restores a more traditional bidding contest after recent Games were awarded through less competitive processes. The 2028 Olympics were awarded to Los Angeles and the 2032 Games to Brisbane well in advance and without direct rival contests. Many IOC members had expressed concerns that these arrangements reduced transparency and limited member involvement in the final decision.
Under the new framework:
- An official shortlist of candidate hosts is expected in March 2027.
- Detailed evaluations of shortlisted bids will follow.
- Governments will be required to provide legal and financial guarantees during a “targeted dialogue” phase beginning in late 2028.
- IOC members will vote on the winning host at a session scheduled for mid-2029.
According to IOC officials, more than ten prospective hosts have already expressed interest in staging the 2036 Olympics or subsequent editions. The IOC expects to publish a list of interested parties as part of its commitment to greater transparency. Among the most prominent contenders are: India; Qatar; Saudi Arabia; Turkey; South Korea; Germany; Chile; Egypt.
India’s Bid Gets a Defined Timeline
The announcement provides fresh momentum to India’s campaign to host its first-ever Olympic Games. The Indian Olympic Association formally submitted a letter of intent to the IOC and has been promoting a bid centered on Ahmedabad as the primary host city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly backed India’s Olympic ambitions, viewing the Games as an opportunity to showcase the country’s economic growth and sporting development.
Indian officials had faced uncertainty after Coventry suspended the host-selection process shortly after assuming office in 2025. The newly announced timeline now gives bidders a structured pathway toward the final vote.
Qatar Emerges as a Strong Rival
Many observers consider Qatar one of the strongest competitors in the race.
The Gulf nation has already hosted major global sporting events including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has staged world championships in athletics, swimming, cycling, gymnastics and other Olympic sports. Qatari officials argue that approximately 95% of the required infrastructure is already in place, reducing the need for large-scale construction. If successful, Qatar would become the first Middle Eastern nation to host the Olympic Games.
Coventry’s Reform Agenda
The decision is one of the most consequential governance changes since Coventry became the IOC’s first female and first African president.
She paused the host-selection process during her first year in office to review concerns about transparency and member participation. The revised process introduces a shortlist stage and provides IOC members with a more direct role in evaluating candidates before the final vote.
The reforms were approved alongside broader changes to the Olympic Charter, including measures reinforcing political neutrality in sport and adjustments to how Olympic disciplines are evaluated for inclusion in future Games.
Next Milestone
The next major milestone will come in March 2027, when the IOC Executive Board is expected to identify a shortlist of candidate hosts for deeper evaluation. Site inspections, financial reviews and government guarantees will follow before IOC members cast their votes in 2029.
