Postscript: In the official statement on the player auction, all references to the IPL are prefixed with VIVO, the Chinese mobile manufacturing company that technically still has two years to run on the title rights sponsorship it signed on to with the BCCI in 2018.

Why is that? Simply put, India’s ongoing political tensions with China has allowed VIVO to exercise its “get out of jail option” in regards to its annual commitments of Rs 4.4 billion per year for servicing the IPL sponsorship. As for the BCCI, till such time as a replacement is found / decided upon, and it is officially announced, the Indian cricket board will publicly continue to maintain the facade that VIVO remains title rights holder. Or so this platform (and pretty much most of the Indian media) believes.
