IPL players auction to be held in Chennai on February 18

MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League players auction will be held in Chennai on February 18. The news was confirmed on IPL’s official Twitter handle on Wednesday.

The auction will be held a day after the scheduled second Test between India and England finishes in Chennai.

The player retention deadline ended on January 20 and the trading window closes on February 4.

ESPNcricinfo reports that teams are allowed a maximum of 25 players on their rosters: the Royal Challengers Bangalore (13), Kings XI Punjab (9), Rajasthan Royals (8) and Kolkata Knight Riders (8) are the teams with the highest number of slots to fill as things stand, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad (3) have the most complete roster at the moment.

According to Cricbuzz, Kings XI will enter the auction with the biggest possible purse of Rs 532 million, followed by RCB, who have Rs 359 million available to them. KKR and SRH have the least amount of purse remaining – Rs 107.5 million.

The February auction will be the first one in which teams do not have any additional funds, which means they have had to release a host of big names to increase their purses and free up their rosters.

The 2020 edition was held in the UAE in September-November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
