JIOSTAR HAS SHUT DOWN a large-scale digital piracy syndicate operating under the name BOS IPTV in a major anti-piracy crackdown timed with the start of the TATA IPL 2026, highlighting the growing threat of organised illegal streaming to India’s sports economy.
The action comes as broadcasters intensify enforcement efforts around one of the country’s most valuable sporting properties, where media rights and advertising revenues run into billions. The piracy network, operating through the domain bostv.org, was found to be illegally distributing premium television content, including sports broadcasts, via an unauthorised IPTV service.
The platform offered access to over 10,000 live TV channels, a library of 25,000+ video-on-demand titles, and services to around 64,000 active subscribers. The operation was run by a team of approximately 20 individuals, indicating a structured and organised syndicate rather than isolated piracy activity.
Following an internal investigation, JioStar filed a criminal complaint with the Cyber Police in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. An FIR was registered on March 26, 2026 under multiple provisions, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Information Technology Act, 2008; Copyright Act, 1957.
Law enforcement authorities have arrested the primary accused, with further arrests expected across multiple states, pointing to a wider piracy network operating across India. The website has since been taken down by its operators.
The crackdown was strategically executed on the opening day of the IPL 2026 season, underscoring the importance of protecting live sports rights during peak consumption periods. JioStar holds exclusive broadcast and digital rights for the IPL (2023–2027 cycle), making piracy a direct threat to its revenue streams from advertising, subscriptions and distribution.
The action follows a broader legal and enforcement strategy by JioStar ahead of the tournament. The Delhi High Court recently granted a dynamic injunction allowing the company to block rogue websites and apps streaming IPL content in real time, strengthening its legal position against piracy. Authorities have also been directed to suspend domains, block access through ISPs and share registrant details, enabling faster takedowns.
