LA28 releases first draft of competition schedule

With three years to go until the Opening Ceremony of the LA28 Olympic Games, the organising committee has offered a first look at the competition schedule.

The LA28 organising committee has revealed the timing of the opening ceremony and closing ceremony as part of the first release of its detailed competition calendar.

The opening ceremony will be split between two iconic venues — the LA Memorial Coliseum and the 2028 Stadium in Inglewood — and is set to begin at 17:00 local time (GMT -7). The closing ceremony will follow on Sunday, 30 July 2028, starting at 18:00 local time.

The LA28 competition schedule, developed in close coordination with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and the International Federations (IFs) of each sport, and with the approval of the IOC executive board, features 18 days of competition and 844 ticketed events, carefully planned to enhance the experience for athletes, fans and global audiences alike.

At the heart of the announcement, the competition schedule sets the stage for two weeks of sport, kicking off with preliminary events across seven disciplines on Wednesday, 12 July, 2028.

Among several innovations, LA28 will reverse the traditional order of swimming and athletics, with athletics taking place in the first week and swimming concluding the programme in the second week. This is to allow time for the 2028 Stadium to be converted into the largest swimming venue in Olympic history, with a planned capacity of 38,000 seats.

After 19 days of action, the Olympic Games LA28 will conclude with a closing ceremony at 18:00 local time on Sunday, 30 July 2028.

Some crucial days –
* 15 July 2028 – Triathlon set to award the first set of medals at the Olympic Games LA28.
* 29 July 2028 – Dubbed “Super Saturday” by the Olympics, the day will feature 16 medal matches in team sports — including both gold and bronze contests — alongside 19 finals in individual events.

In addition to being the third time Los Angeles hosts the Olympic Games, 2028 will be the city’s first time hosting the Paralympic Games.
