Madras HC plea against Virat for endorsing ‘online gambling’

MUMBAI: A petition has reportedly been filed in the Madras High Court seeking the prosecution of Team India cricket captain Virat Kohli and actor Tamannaah Bhatia for endorsing “online gambling”.

A Chennai-based advocate moved the Madras High Court on Friday, seeking a ban on all sorts of online gambling applications in the country, India Today reports. The lawyer mentioned in his petition that celebrities like Kohli are capable of influencing youngsters in the country who take up online gambling.

The petition also cited a youngster who committed suicide after failing to repay the debts accumulated after gambling online. A Bench headed by Justice Sundaresh and Surya Prakasam has posted the case for Tuesday, 4th August.

Incidentally, it was in January that Kohli extended his association with Mobile Premier League (MPL) for another year. Kohli represents and endorses the fantasy gaming platform across channels.

MPL had first teamed up with Kohli early in 2019, releasing video campaigns with the charismatic cricketer ahead of and during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since then, MPL has garnered a registered user base of 32 million and over 5 billion gameplays have been clocked on the platform.
