NEW DELHI: The first meeting of the HRD parliamentary standing committee headed by BJP’s Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament), was held here Tuesday.
Its mandate – to oversee preparations for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. It goes without saying that it is not often that parliamentary standing committees are assigned such tasks.
According to a report in the New Indian Express, the Union Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India and five national sports federations were in attendance. The NSFs which were called to give the presentation included the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), Weightlifting Federation of India (IWLF), Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and Hockey India (HI).
The reason for said meeting – the committee wanted to review the medal preparedness of all the five disciplines ahead of nest year’s Tokyo Olympics.
While the Sports Ministry and SAI made separate presentations on India’s preparations for the Tokyo Olympics and beyond, the federations are expected to give their presentations next month.
The committee included 30 parliamentarians from both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) and according to Times of India, there will be more such meetings in the near future.
Besides Sahasrabuddhe, the committee includes Jyotiraditya Scindia, Arvind Kumar Sharma and Bhubaneswar Kalita.
Agendas of the meeting
TOI reports that the committee discussed the country’s preparedness for Tokyo Olympics, resumption of sports activities, training, status of the national camps and size of the contingent.
