PATIALA: The Punjab government has decided to set up a sports university in Patiala, state finance minister Manpreet Badal, confirmed this while presenting the budget in the state assembly on Saturday.
The government has proposed to set up a sports university in chief minister Amarinder Singh’s home city with an initial allocation of Rs 100 million, The Tribune reports. The sports portfolio lies with the chief minister.
Additionally, a grant of Rs 62.5 million has been allocated for the financial year 2018-2019 to build stadiums at Guru Har Sahai (Ferozepur), Urmar Tanda (Hoshiarpur), Gidderbaha (Muktsar) and Khadoor Sahib (Amritsar).
In a related development, a centre of excellence for shooters will be established at the Mohali Shooting Range, The Tribune reports. Along with this, a new trap and skeet shooting range will be set up in Mukatsar with a budget of Rs 60 million.
The budget has also allocated a grant of Rs 5 million for the Centre’s Khelo India programme.
