THE PRIME VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE (PVL) has achieved a major milestone after receiving official recognition from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) as India’s first division professional volleyball league.
The announcement comes ahead of the league’s fifth season, which is scheduled to commence on November 30, with the Season 5 player auction set to be held in Goa on August 17.
The FIVB’s recognition is a significant endorsement of the league’s growth since its launch in 2022. According to the world governing body, the designation acknowledges PVL’s role in establishing a structured, high-performance professional competition that has helped raise playing standards, expand the domestic talent pool and strengthen the volleyball ecosystem in India.
One of the most important outcomes of the recognition is that clubs participating in the Prime Volleyball League will now be eligible to compete in international club competitions organised under the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA), the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) and the FIVB, subject to the applicable qualification criteria and regulations. This creates a pathway for Indian clubs to compete against leading teams from Asia and around the world for the first time through an officially recognised league structure.
Season 5 is expected to build on the league’s growing popularity. Franchises will assemble their squads during the player auction in Goa on August 17 before the competition gets underway on November 30. The league has steadily expanded its commercial footprint over the past four seasons, attracting corporate sponsors, broadcasters and an increasing fan base.
The recognition also comes at a time when Indian volleyball is undergoing significant administrative changes. Earlier this year, the FIVB assumed a greater oversight role in the governance of the sport in India, making the recognition of a professionally managed domestic league particularly significant for the sport’s future development.
Commercially, the Prime Volleyball League has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing non-cricket sports properties. Season 4 generated 239 million live television and YouTube views and accumulated more than 1.1 billion views across broadcast and digital platforms, reflecting the league’s growing appeal among younger audiences and digital-first consumers. The league has also attracted substantial investor interest, with its valuation reaching approximately ₹500 crore following the expansion to ten franchises.
From a sports business perspective, the FIVB recognition marks a transformative moment for Indian volleyball. Official first division status enhances the league’s credibility, improves its ability to attract sponsors and broadcasters, and creates new international opportunities for participating clubs. It also strengthens the commercial proposition of the league by linking domestic success with continental and global club competitions, positioning the Prime Volleyball League as a key driver of volleyball’s professional and commercial growth in India.
