Cricket administrator Rajeev Shukla is set to replace Roger Binny as the BCCI president in an interim role, PTI reports.
Binny, who became board president in 2022 replacing Sourav Ganguly, will turn 70 on July 19 and will cross the age-limit threshold for an office-bearer.
Shukla, currently BCCI vice-president, would be the acting board president till fresh elections are held during the body’s AGM in September. “As per convention, the senior most office-bearer takes charge in a such a scenario. He (Shukla) will perform that role until fresh elections are held in September,” a BCCI source told the newswire.
Binny took over as BCCI president in October 2022 after former India skipper Ganguly had completed his three-year tenure in the office. It bears noting that for most of Binny’s tenure, current ICC chair Jay Shah was BCCI secretary.
Before assuming the BCCI president role, Binny was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. He was a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team under Kapil Dev. He later went on to coach the India Under-19 team that won the 2000 edition of the ICC World Cup for that age group.
Shukla is a Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party and has previously served as the chairman of the Indian Premier League. He was re-appointed IPL chairman in 2015. Post that, Shukla was elected unopposed as BCCI vice-president in December 2020.
