Report: 8 state assns pitch for holding at least Ranji group stage

MUMBAI: With the Ranji Trophy set to be cancelled for a second season running due to the recent surge in the COVID-19 cases, eight state cricket boards have reportedly urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to not do the same.

The BCCI had suspended the tournament, which was supposed to kick off on January 13, earlier this month citing the rise in the COVID-19 cases which also resulted in the knockouts of the Cooch Behar Trophy getting postponed.

According to a report in the New Indian Express, eight state associations approached the board to conduct the tournament. However, the board hasn’t offered any commitment given the short window before the start of the 15th edition of the IPL.

As per the report, the full season of the Ranji Trophy needs a window of 75 days, which looks next to impossible given the number of days remaining and taking quarantine requirements into consideration. However, the state bodies have even requested for just group stages to take place keeping the shrinking window in mind, but that too will take a period of 39 days to be held properly.
