SC clears AIFF’s draft constitution; adoption within 4 weeks

THE SUPREME Court on Friday approved the draft constitution presented by the All India Football Federation with some modifications, and directed the AIFF to hold a general body meeting within four weeks to adopt the new constitution.

It bears noting that the AIFF’s constitution has been under review since 2017.

Pertinently, the apex court also recognised the election of the current set of office bearers headed by Kalyan Chaubey, and ruled that the executive committee he leads would stay in place till the next elections scheduled for 2026.

The Supreme Court ruling follows pressure from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which had earlier warned that India’s football governing body faced suspension if its constitution was not formally ratified by October 30.

The drafting of the AIFF constitution has been in progress since 2017, with the “final draft” having been submitted to the Supreme Court as far back as July 2022.
