SUPREME COURT on Thursday modified its January 2017 order, allowing former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur to participate in the board’s affairs in accordance with its rules and regulations.
In January 2017, the apex court had directed Thakur to cease and desist from being associated with the BCCI. On Thursday, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi applied the doctrine of proportionality to revise that order.
The bench issued the direction while hearing an application filed by Thakur seeking modification of the 2017 ruling. The court noted that he had previously tendered an unqualified apology.
The apex court had initiated contempt and perjury proceedings against Thakur on 2 January 2017 for filing a false affidavit regarding a letter to then International Cricket Council (ICC) chairperson Shashank Manohar on the issue of the BCCI’s autonomy.
On 14 July 2017, the court granted him relief by dropping the contempt and perjury charges after he personally submitted an unconditional and unequivocal apology.
